A Playroom the Children Can Reset Themselves

Toys were sorted in a way only an adult could maintain. We rebuilt the room at child height with photo labels and far fewer categories.

The finished space in Northport. The before and after are described in full below.

The problem

What the household was actually dealing with before we arrived.

The room had been organized before, into fourteen labelled bins, and the system collapsed within a week every time. The categories were too fine for a four and a six year old to follow, and most bins sat above their reach.

The process we used

Declutter, sort, optimize, applied to this particular room.

We cut fourteen categories down to six, which is roughly what the children could name themselves when we asked them. Every bin moved to the lowest two shelves. Labels became a photograph of the contents alongside the word, so the four year old can put things back before she can read. We kept one deliberately empty bin on the end for whatever the next obsession turns out to be, because a system with no slack breaks the first week of a new interest. Anything outgrown or missing pieces was cleared with the children present, which took longer but meant nothing came back out of the donation bag.

Before and after

What changed, described plainly

Written rather than staged, so you can judge the difference on substance instead of on photography.

Before

Fourteen narrow categories in stacked bins, most above child height, with the floor acting as overflow by mid-afternoon.

After

Six broad categories in open bins on the bottom two shelves, photo labels on every bin, and one empty bin held in reserve.

The result

Cleanup became something the children do themselves in about five minutes, and the system has held through two birthdays.

Outcomes

  • Fourteen categories reduced to six the children could name
  • All bins moved to the lowest two shelves
  • Photo labels added so a pre-reader can reset the room
  • One empty bin kept as deliberate slack for new interests
