Case study
A Working Kitchen for a Household of Five
Every drawer held a little of everything. We rebuilt the kitchen around the three places work actually happens: the range, the sink, and the coffee counter.

- Two sessions, eight hours total
AfterThe problem
What the household was actually dealing with before we arrived.
Utensils, batteries, takeout menus and phone chargers shared the same three drawers, and the cabinet nearest the stove held glassware while the pots lived across the room. Cooking one meal meant crossing the kitchen four or five times.
The process we used
Declutter, sort, optimize, applied to this particular room.
We started by watching where things get used rather than where they were stored. Cooking tools and pots moved to the cabinets and drawers within one step of the range. Everyday plates and glasses moved beside the dishwasher, so unloading became a single turn. The coffee setup got its own defined corner with mugs directly above it. Drawer dividers went in only after the contents were decided, never before, so they fit the real inventory rather than an ideal one. The junk drawer stayed, deliberately, but it got a divider and a boundary.
Before and after
What changed, described plainly
Before
Three mixed-purpose drawers, cookware stored across the room from the range, glassware in the prime cabinet beside the stove, and small appliances competing for counter space.
After
Three work zones with their tools within arm's reach, a dedicated coffee corner, dividers cut to the real utensil count, and two rarely used appliances relocated to the pantry.
The result
The daily cook stopped crossing the kitchen for basic tools, and the counter has stayed clear because everything left on it earns its place.
Outcomes
- Kitchen rebuilt into range, sink and coffee zones
- Cookware relocated to within one step of the range
- Drawer dividers cut to the real inventory, not a template
- Two seldom-used appliances moved out of prime counter space
