How a Shared Pinterest Board Changes an Organizing Project

Every client gets a board before we start. It is the cheapest way we know to find out whether we have understood you.

Organizing is a visual job described in words, which is where most of the misunderstandings come from. Two people can both say they want a calm, simple pantry and picture completely different rooms. One of them is imagining open wooden shelving and glass jars. The other is imagining doors that close and nothing visible at all.

So before any session, we open a shared Pinterest board and invite you to it.

What goes on the board

We start it with a handful of images that reflect what we heard in the consultation, and then you add to it. Anything that appeals, anything that does not, anything that reminds you of something you have seen and liked. Pins from your own saved boards are welcome and are usually the most useful things on there.

Reactions matter as much as additions. Telling us that a room feels cold, or too bare, or too fussy teaches us more about your taste than an hour of conversation would.

Why it goes up before the work starts

Because it is far cheaper to be wrong on a board than to be wrong in your house.

If we have misread the brief, we find out while it is still six images on a screen, not after we have set up a system you quietly dislike. It has changed the direction of plenty of projects, usually in small ways and occasionally completely.

It also settles disagreements between partners early, and without either of them having to be the one who says no to something already installed. Two people pinning to the same board tends to surface the difference within a day.

What it does during the project

Once we are working, the board becomes the shared reference. When we are choosing between two ways to handle a corner, we can point at what you already told us you liked, rather than starting the discussion from scratch.

It is also where product options go. Rather than sending you a list of links to open, you see the actual item in context, next to the other pins you have already responded to.

What it does afterwards

The board stays yours, and this is the part clients tell us they did not expect to use.

Months later, when you are putting something away and cannot quite remember how a zone was set up, it is on the board. When you are about to buy something for the room, it is a two-second check against what is already there. When you finally get to the room we did not do, you have a starting point.

We add photographs of the finished zones to it before we close a project, so it is a record of the systems as well as of the intentions.

It is not an extra, and it is not optional theatre

There is no charge for it and there is no separate step you have to remember. It goes up after the free consultation and it stays live for the whole project and afterwards.

If you have never used Pinterest, we set it up and you can respond by text or email instead, and we will pin on your behalf. The point is not the platform. The point is that we agree on what we are aiming for while it is still cheap to change our minds.
